Consume no alcohol or soda this month. All money that might have been spent on alcohol or soda gets stashed into a savings account.
Consume no junk food this month. (It’s the shortest month of the year, you can do it.) All money that might have been spent on junk food gets stashed into a savings account.
Don’t buy a single new thing this month. If you need something, buy used or wait until next month. Put the money you would have spent on new items into a savings account.
Pack your lunch every day this month. Try not to dine out for lunch even once. If you already pack your lunch, try packing a cheaper one. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cost just pennies. Put the money you save into savings.
Keep the AC off as long as you possibly can. Open the windows, drink ice water, and use fans to keep cool. Put the money you save into a savings account.
Don’t spend a dime on games this month. Take the money you might have spent on sports, video games, mobile games, board games, or gambling and put it into a savings account.
Cancel your Netflix subscription for the month. Put the money that would have been spent on Netflix into a savings account. Don’t worry, you can safely cancel your Netflix subscription and not lose your queue.
Go above & beyond. Do something to earn extra money this month. Ask for a raise, work more, donate plasma, do odd jobs, have a rummage sale., etc. Put that money into a savings account; be disciplined—don’t spend it, save it.
Can you go one month without buying a single thing online? Are you up to the challenge? Put whatever money you might have spent on online purchases into a savings account.
Got an expensive habit or hobby? Cut back a little or lot. Put the money you save into a savings account.
Keep the heat off as long as you can. Layer clothes and blankets and exercise to keep warm. Put the money you save into a savings account.
Make an agreement with family and friends to cut back significantly this holiday season. Exchange love instead of debt. Whatever money you save gets stashed into savings.
Consult with a friend. Exchange something, anything that will benefit the both of you financially. For suggestions, see my post titled “How Reciprocity Can Save You Money.”
